Developing Leaders at Dell
Interaction Associates has been developing leaders at Dell Computer for over a decade, and is one of only three global providers of leadership development within their system.
Our first program, Strategic Leadership @ Dell, was conceived as a core building block of Dell’s overall Europe-Middle East-Africa (EMEA) high-potential program. This targeted program seamlessly integrated with Dell’s leadership competency framework, and was designed to develop leaders’ personal insight (emotional IQ) and collaborative skills with on-the-job activities and experience.
Dell wanted to reframe its definition of success for managers and leaders. Always a results driven and aggressive organization, Dell realized the power and potential of building a high-involvement culture. They asked Interaction Associates to help engage their people via this learning vehicle, expecting that leaders would gain additional inspiration and integrate what has come to be called “The Soul of Dell” into their leadership styles. IA’s work developed an increased ability in managers and leaders to craft inspiring visions of the work of the organization; this unique program has been a tremendous success at Dell, with more than 1,100 leaders trained.
Interaction Associates has also consulted to the internal Dell leadership learning group. IA assisted in the development of multiple learning processes, the use of 360 degree feedback instruments, business simulations, and the organization of classroom training. As Dell’s strategic imperatives changed, IA has assisted with the complete, ground up redesign of their development programs. Additionally, Interaction Associates was selected and completed the redesign of two of Dell’s intellectual properties and the retooling of Dell’s training staff.
More recently, Interaction Associates has assisted Dell in developing women leaders with the Women in Leadership program.
Success has been measured in a number of ways. The results indicate that our programs are developing leaders, quickly, in the areas Dell needs to reach its goals:
The majority of program graduates has been rated No. 1 or No. 2 performers inside Dell (the top two levels of a five-tier rating system).
Participants have enjoyed above-average bonus and stock modifiers.
There have been measurable increases in Winning Culture metrics for the Tell Dell employee opinion survey (internal proprietary information to Dell).
