Fostering a More Innovative Culture at the EPA (OPEI)

We assisted the EPA to leverage internal resources to solve its problems and become more innovative.

Over the course of two years,  Interaction Associates worked with the Office of Policy, Economics and Innovation (OPEI) to support the agency’s steering committee in developing a practical strategy for fostering an agency culture that is more conducive to innovation and innovative environmental problem solving.

Interaction Associates worked with the steering committee, and provided substantive and procedural advice and coaching regarding four major aspects of the organizational culture change strategy process:

  • Goal definition and development.
  • Barrier identification.
  • Change strategy development.
  • Strategy implementation/communication.

Return on Involvement

The result of our work together yielded the initial strategy that is now being implemented at an organizational level. We consider the greatest accomplishment of this process to have been our ability to work collaboratively with key stakeholders on the steering committee, and to provide frameworks, tools and coaching/facilitation support that allowed the steering committee’s best thinking to emerge. OPEI created the content, and did the strategic thinking necessary to develop and communicate the strategy internally rather than being handed a strategy completed by external consultants.
